Created a Google Code Project for FB Data Mining

I have created a project in Google code, project name is data-extraction-facebook, the project include extraction all code related to our Mining research will be checked in here. All the code is release under GNU Public license. Since this is a research project only team members have access to check-in, in that case most of the development will be done by myself and Mark Henning.

Facebook Application to Extract Data for Data Mining

After couple of stabs at facebook-java-api, I was able to build my frist facebook application which happened to be the first stage of developing a app to extract data from facebook for my Data Mining research. At Facebook has three types of RestClients that you can invoke to do your development. And in my case I use FacebookXMLRestClient.

At some point I will write a tutorial type blog post on building a facebook application, but for now I will have the screen shots. I have a feeling going forward I will run into an issue because, my intention is to populate the data model while I am extracting data. Since this is web approach I have to use Hibernate to get the database populate. For research project like this where I want to spend more time on developing our mining concepts rather than ORM technologies is not the best place to experiment my hibernate skills. So at somepoint I have to figure out away to make this as a desktop application and use regular JDBC connection to do data population.

As of now the application I wrote login and extract all the IDs of my Facebook friends, and the next step would be to iterate over each of my friend user id and get their friends.

Looks like I will be more involve with the facebook-java-api team, so far I think we need more documentation on java api. Also I dont know why Facebook decided to stop supporting facebook java api.

As a tabla player, song writer and a big fan of Asian Underground music, I have been religiously listening to Bobby Nihal Show week after week. And I am really honored and thankful to both Nihal and Bobby for selecting a song that I wrote to be played in BBC Radio One Bobby & Nihal Show for the second consecutive time. Last year Nihal played “Paa Salamba” track which I wrote for Ranidu for almost three weeks in his play list.

It is so cloying to hear a song that you wrote on a place like BBC…

Pulling my hair out on FB Data Extraction

I am trying it put together java base data extraction module for Facebook data. I am doing this to get large enough data set for my data mining project. I am thankful for all the developers who are trying to keep up the java-facebook-api upto date, but I had enormous amount of issues with facebook-java-api. Including my other research work this is the latest enemy of sleep. So, to give you an idea, for the last four days my total number of sleep hours are in single digit.

If you read my previous blog post you already know about the Atha Mita Kazi Track. Ok here we go on a nut shell, I wrote lyrics for Ranidu’s (Check Out Ranidu’s New Website) latest Track Artha Mita kazi (The Fake Friendz Song). I am proud to say that once again we put Sri Lanka on the world music map with the head held high. BBC Radio Adil Ray’s show is a well known international Radio Show that plays world music. Currently Adil Ray has put our song on his “Big One” collection.

Dr Palitha Kohona Reminds MIA to stick with what she is good at it

Yesterday I was watching Travis Smiley Show and I must say that Dr Palitha Kohona Foreign Secretary reminded MIA to stick with what she is really good at it which is Music. As a musician I don’t see a “WOW” factor on MIA’s music or lyrics that she writes but I will still respect her work and effort as an artist. MIA’s father is an active LTTE supporter who also happened to one of the earliest members of the LTTE group. Going back to what MIA emphasize which was genocide in Sri Lanka, Do we really have such an atmosphere in Sri Lanka?

As Dr Kohona mentioned, those who claim this Genocide in Sri Lanka should come to Colombo or any other Government control area and get an experience on how we live life in Sri Lanka. Every leading school in Sri Lanka has Tamil Medium classes. In that case, if so called Genocide exists how come leading Schools like Royal College etc has Tamil Medium class rooms which allow Sri Lankan Tamil population to have equal opportunity. As a fellow Royalist who shared my high school life with many of my Tamil friends, It is really frustrating to see people like MIA using situation in Sri Lanka to label majority of Sri Lankan population as evil.

Go Lakers: Sorry Boston not this time

This year Lakers started series of educational lecturing session. First was How to beat Boston, at Staple Center and the lecture was given on the Christmas day by Kobe and the Lakers with some examples. And yesterday we saw the second lesson taught by Kobe and Lakers. But this time title was bit difference, it was How to beat Boston in their Stupid Green House. So all I have to say is that Sorry Boston you ain’t going to win NBA Championship this time. Also the best part is you are going to loose to Cavaliers in Eastern Conference Final.
